This is an original pottery piece created by Roger Neufeld.

A low, squat ceramic jar with its lid tilted beside it. The body of the vessel is made from a dark, almost charcoal clay that gives it a somber, earthen presence. Band-like patches of highly reflective, metallic glaze — warm golds and bronzy coppers with flashes of pink and silvery highlights — streak across the exterior, catching and fragmenting the light so they look almost like burnished skin or patches of hammered metal laid against the matte body.

The lid echoes the same contrast: a smooth domed top with matching metallic patches, set against the darker ground. Where the glaze is dense it creates a mirror-like sheen; where it thins the dark clay peeks through, creating a textured, layered effect. Inside the jar the surface appears uniformly dark, suggesting a careful, inward finish that contrasts with the dramatic exterior decoration.

Overall, the piece balances weight and delicacy — the rounded silhouette feels solid and tactile, while the shimmering glaze throws the eye, giving the object a quiet, jewel-like presence. The deliberate imperfections in the metallic areas and the variation in sheen read like the traces of the maker’s hand and the kiln’s chemistry, making the jar feel both crafted and a little wild.

The piece is made with raku fired clay. The piece was created in 2024.

The overall dimensions of the pottery are 14cm tall with a 9cm diameter.
