This is an original pastel work by David Coates.

A quiet, autumnal landscape unfolds across the canvas, built from layered bands of color and subtle texture. At the left edge a small stand of slender, blackish trunks rises—tall, slightly wavering lines with delicate, twiggy branches and clusters of pale yellow leaves that seem to catch the last light. Those verticals anchor the scene against a wide, open field that stretches to the right in horizontal sweeps of gold, ochre and muted brown.

The middle distance is treated with soft, cross-hatched strokes that suggest low, misty hills and a scattering of distant trees, their outlines barely darker than the hazy air. Above, the sky is a ribboned chiaroscuro of dusky rose, deep maroon and smoky purples, layered like weathered fabric. The painterly surfaces are textured—scratched and scumbled marks that give the grasses and soil a fibrous, tactile quality—while thin, translucent washes build depth and atmosphere.

The overall mood is contemplative and slightly melancholy, as if the day is turning toward dusk or an early, cool evening in late autumn. A small signature and possible date sit unobtrusively in the lower right corner, but the main focus remains the interplay of vertical trees and horizontal plains and the warm, restrained palette that evokes a landscape settling into quiet.
