This is an original pottery piece created by Roger Neufeld.
A small, hand-crafted lidded vessel. Its silhouette is a compact, rounded cylinder with gently curving shoulders and a dome-like lid that fits neatly on top. The overall scale looks palm-sized — intimate and tactile.
The surface is predominantly a deep, almost black clay or glaze that reads matte in places and quietly reflective in others. Over that dark field are painterly, irregular patches of color: warm ochres and mossy greens blend into one another on the front, their edges soft and feathered as if the pigment flowed across the surface while still wet. The lid carries a contrasting, cool flash of turquoise-blue — a metallic, iridescent sheen split by two darker crescents — which catches the light and gives the piece a jewel-like accent. Tiny variations in tone and a few minute surface irregularities suggest it was fired and glazed by hand rather than mass-produced.
Vessel’s rounded form and the subtle interplay between the matte black and the glossy color highlights are the major points of interest to this piece. Together these elements give the jar a quiet, contemplative presence: simple in shape but rich in surface detail, where earthy and luminous colors meet in an understated, artful balance.
The lids surface is highly polished and glossy, reflecting highlights, and shows vivid swaths of turquoise-green that look wet and liquid against the black. Those bright, glassy accents create a striking contrast to the cup’s softer, matte decoration.
The form emphasizes the contrast of textures: velvety, muted surfaces versus slick, mirror-like glaze. Together the lid and vessel read like a duet — handcrafted, modern ceramics that balance rough, natural color fields with deliberate, luminous accents. The overall effect is quietly elegant and tactile, inviting you to reach out and feel the difference between the two finishes.
The piece is made with raku fired clay. The piece was created in 2024.
The overall dimensions of the pottery are 14cm tall with a 9cm diameter.
