This is a pottery piece created by Elizabeth Schapansky. It is part of the "Mother Earth" series.
A small ceramic bowl. It has a rounded, slightly asymmetrical handmade look, with a short, sturdy handle on one side that gives it a mug-like character while still feeling more like a shallow bowl or dipping dish. The glaze is the most striking feature: deep earthy browns flow across the exterior, while the inside opens into a rich, glossy mix of dark blue, teal, and coppery gold tones. The colors seem to swirl and pool organically, creating a mottled, almost molten effect that suggests a kiln-fired craft piece rather than a mass-produced item.
The rim is uneven in a pleasing way, with subtle variations that emphasize its artisanal quality. Light catches the glossy surface in small highlights, especially inside the bowl and along the curved exterior, giving the piece a sense of depth and texture even though it is smooth. Overall, it feels rustic, elegant, and handmade—something both functional and decorative, with a strong sense of character in its glaze and form.
The work is made with high fire clay and multiple different glazes.
This work was created 2023.
The overall dimensions of the pottery are 9" Tall by 7" diameter.
This piece is functional and food safe.
This piece is part of the "Beauty of the Rockies" Temporary Exhibit. Come and see it in person through out the months of June and July 2026.
