When I was about 7 years of age, my Mom took me along the edge of the lake to find clay to make small pots for something to do during the summer. We made small pinch pots and coil pots and baked them in the fire. I was smitten! Since then I have explored many different kinds of clay, different glazes and multiple firing techniques to make pieces. There is no end to the myriad of ways you can create beautiful art with clay.
Since then, I have been making pottery on and off for over 40 years. I go through phases with my design and glazing, but also return again and again to my favorite techniques and glazes. I have taken many wonderful workshops to hone my skills, and participated in many pottery and craft sales, and sold my work in galleries. I love meeting and chatting with the people who buy my work, and have some loyal customers who collect my pieces. My best customers are family members, and I am always gratified to walk into a house where my pottery is displayed with pride.
Most of my work is functional, because I love nothing better than to serve a meal in my lovingly made bowls, or drink coffee out of my heartily built cups. My quest is to make usable items that feel good in your hand, so I encourage buyers to pick up the item they are interested in to see how it fits their hand.
I also make decorative Raku fired ware, because I have a bit of "magpie" in me. I love bright colours, and Raku is the way to really sparkle up your pottery. I love how the effects of Raku firing are almost instant, and there is no waiting for hours to see if your pieces have turned our. I have done regular Raku, Obvara, Naked Raku, Saggar, and Horsehair Raku. I offer Raku firings for friends, and it is a wonderfully social event as we have fun and make beautiful pieces. Raku fired ware is not food safe, but can be a stunning addition to your decor.
I also specialize in making urns for people as well as pets. Many of my friends, family, and pets are now resting in and urn that I made, which I find helps me deal with the loss. I can make a custom urn, and have many beautiful urns on hand.
