This is an original pottery piece created by Roger Neufeld.

A small, hand-formed ceramic jar sits against like a tiny weathered relic. Its shape is simple and sturdy: a squat cylindrical body topped by a fitted lid that terminates in a rounded knob you could wrap your fingertips around. Proportions are compact — something that would feel reassuringly palm-sized and weighty when lifted.

What makes the piece striking is the surface treatment. The body is largely a deep, almost black matte, but a patch on the front blooms with iridescent color — a wash of warm yellow, olive-green and hints of purple and bronze that looks as if fire and saltwater met the clay. The lid and knob share that metallic sheen, mottled and burnished, catching light with a soft, antique glimmer. The glaze appears uneven and organic: a deliberate imperfection where drips, pits and thin spots create a lived-in, handcrafted character.

There’s a tactile contrast suggested between the smooth, lustrous areas and the rougher, darker matrix around them. The piece reads like a small, ritual object — intimate, utilitarian and quietly ornamental at once. The clean, neutral background keeps attention on its textures and colors, emphasizing the jar’s modest, deliberate beauty.

The piece is made with raku fired clay. The piece was created in 2024.

The overall dimensions of the pottery are 14cm tall with a 9cm diameter.
