About the Artist

Roger Neufeld

Roger lives in Red Deer, where he has learned pottery skills at city art classes, and various workshops. He continues to learn and grow by participating in the Red Deer Pottery Club.

Until about 2017 art-making was sporadic, mostly involving wood sculpture. The first motivation for work in wood was the beautiful appearance of a slab of compressed-grain redwood found at a roadside lumber shop in California. The resulting sculpture was a pleasure to work on from the standpoint of the sheer sensory elements of the medium - the heft, the surfaces, and the colour and feel of the wood. The piece illustrated a mathematical abstraction (circles inscribed within circles), offering a pattern that might trigger associations to human experiences. These three concerns - qualities of the material, abstractions that it might express, and the associations it might trigger remain his windows into art - his own and others’. It has been a pleasure to consider that some of the pieces, though categorized as "visual" art, might nonetheless have appeal for a visually impaired appreciator, thanks to shape, heft and texture.

Since around 2018 he works in pottery, seeking to build wheel-throwing, hand-building and other skills, and to form satisfying pieces. Exploring techniques that are new to him is what keeps him most engaged. The rich interaction between the intentions of an artist and the irreducible workings of chance in the materials, the kiln, and the passage of time.
