This is an original pastel work by David Coates.
The picture shows a wide, open mountain landscape painted in a soft, atmospheric style. In the distance, dark, rugged peaks stretch across the horizon, their jagged forms partially veiled by a moody sky filled with thick, drifting clouds. The clouds are layered and heavy, yet broken in places by pale light, giving the scene a sense of changeable weather and quiet drama.
In the midground, a broad meadow spreads outward in muted green and yellow tones, suggesting wild grass and open alpine fields. Several tall, slender evergreens rise from the plain, their dark silhouettes standing out sharply against the lighter background. They give the composition a vertical rhythm and draw the eye upward toward the mountains and sky.
The painting feels calm but not entirely still. There is a subtle sense of wind and distance, as if the land is vast, cold, and breathing under the shifting sky. The brushwork appears loose and textured, lending the scene a natural, impressionistic quality. Overall, it conveys the beauty of a remote wilderness—quiet, expansive, and touched with a touch of melancholy.
The work is 25.5" Wide by 31" Tall.
