This is an original pottery piece created by Roger Neufeld.

This ceramic piece presents a fascinating interplay of texture, color, and form. The vessel has a rounded, almost bulbous shape with a slightly wider top tapering down to a narrower base. What stands out immediately are the irregular, organic perforations scattered throughout the upper half and middle of the pottery, creating a pattern of holes that invite light and air to pass through.

The surface glazing is a blend of contrasting shades. The top portion features a milky white glaze with streaks and drips of muted turquoise adding subtle color variation and visual interest. This upper glaze transitions into a deep, matte black glaze that dominates the bottom half of the vessel. The black base adds weight and grounding to the object, while the fading effect between the two colors suggests a natural, flowing gradient.

The perforations themselves enhance the tactile quality of the object; they appear to be intentionally uneven and imperfect, which gives the piece a hand-crafted, almost primitive feel. Artistically, the combination of holes and the glaze's gradient effect might symbolize the merging of light and dark, or the interaction between emptiness and form.

This piece could be seen as a modern or abstract take on traditional pottery, potentially used as a decorative lantern or a holder that casts playful shadows when illuminated from within, emphasizing the holes' pattern and adding depth to the visual experience. The ceramic's irregularities and color scheme lend it a contemporary aesthetic that bridges natural elements with artistic expression.

Roger made the blue drips on the side with bottle glass, which is melted in the glaze firing process letting the glass drip down the sides of the piece.

The piece is made with raku fired clay. The piece was created in 2025.

The overall dimensions of the pottery are 4.75" tall with a 6.75" diameter.
